Bruce Burne, archivist, talks about his family background, in particular his father's career in the building industry where he was prominent in the Master Builders Federation Association in late 1930s and was Australian employers' delegate for the International Labour Organisation in Geneva in the 50s and 60s. He then talks about his education at Genazzano Convent, Xavier Preparatory School, Burke Hall, Xavier College and University of Melbourne in 1944. Burne then talks about his time as a seminarian which he left in 1953. He then discusses coming to Canberra to the then Commonwealth National Library to do a library course and moving to Melbourne to the Archives Division of Commonwealth Parliamentary Library as an archives officer. Burne discusses the nature of archives work at the time and his trips overseas to look at methods used in Paris, Public Record Office, U.K. and Sweden.
From 1966-69 he worked in Zambia as Director of the Overseas Service Bureau and in 1971 he took up a position in Fiji as Western Pacific archivist. Burne describes the state of the Western Pacific Archives and the microfilming operations at the Archives and his work during the Independence of Fiji. He then returned to Australia as Deputy Keeper of the Public Record Office in Melbourne from 1979-81. In conclusion Burne talks about his involvement with professional associations and particular archivists and the changes he has seen in the profession.
