Cotter talks about his family background; mother's encouragement of music in the home; schooling experiences in Malaya at British Army Children's School and Melbourne High School. He then talks about moving to Canberra; early working experiences and involvement in a band. Cotter then describes the musical situation at Melbourne High; decision to make music his career; experiences at School of Music and development of his interest in composition. He then discusses his decision to work on music for the theatre and the role of the composer in the theatre and working for directors, Ross McGregor and Ralph Wilson. Cotter then discusses his involvement in the following productions, Sweeney Todd, Man from Mukinupin, Under Milkwood, Macbeth, Marathon 33, Effect of Gamma rays on man in the moon marigolds, Importance of being Ernest, Flash Jim Vaux and Tintookies.
He then talks about working with Frans Verenne, Rex Cramphorn and Dorothy Hewett. Cotter then discusses the need for preserving his material; future plans and Don Bank's influence on his work. He concludes by considering the directions music might take in the future.
