Nolan speaks of his childhood in Swan Hill where his father was a baker, how he worked cutting wood on paddlesteamers used to transport wood and wool before road transport superceded them, various jobs like working in a pub and working in Melbourne as a grease monkey to get money to support his mother, the importance of good manners then in obtaining a job, how his sister Joyce became very sick with a blood disease, how in 1935 he worked on the land picking crops, shearing and wood cutting, droving and settling cattle by playing the mouth organ, moved back to Swan Hill in 1937 milking which was sold for 3 pence a pint, how he met Jimmy Dean an Aboriginal musician and why he is not a coloured man, how he split wood during the war years, his period in the Army, working on the trams, making wooden toys for the chain store Myer, renovating houses, tells some yarns including a handicapped family he knew, his travels around Australia in the 1960s, how he got involved in whaling in 1963-1965.
Nolan speaks about whale hunting and processing; his unpaid work on whaling boats; how whaling ceased in Albany, W. A. in 1978, behaviour of and facts about whales, how dolphins and sharks fight, how he travelled to Harvey Bay Qld. to talk about whales and his talks to children about whales, his current involvement about fighting the use of chemical sprays on plants and assisting with research on their adverse effects on children.
