Summary

Haythorne speaks of his recent work with the Australian Ballet in Graeme Murphy's Nutcracker, other versions of the Nutcracker, Stanton Welch's production of Cinderella, his family and their background, his early education including his dance and theatrical education, how his parents organised wartime concert parties, Harold Raymond the blind violinist, the beginnings of his professional career with Harold Raymond's Varieties, dancing during the war in Townsville, seeing the Ballet Rambert during its Australian tour, working in Adelaide, working in Adelaide, his notion of theatricality, touring Australian towns in the 1940s and travelling to London for his studies. He then talks about working with the Metropolitan Ballet and its repertoire, the teaching styles of Anna Northcote, Idzikowski and Audrey de Vos, working with the International ballet and Mona Inglesby, Algeranoff's ballet For Love or Money, how he came to work for Alan Carter, summer seasons, staging musicals in Britain, working on BBC television especially in Giselle.

Haythorne discusses going to South Africa with the Pyjama Game, returning to work in the UK, the injury to his back, his work notating ballets, choreographing the Winifred Atwell Show, theatre in London in the 1950s, working at La Scala, the repertoire and performances of Massine's Company including at the Edinburgh Festival, his work in Holland, making film versions of Massine's ballets, working with Walter Gore's London Ballet, guesting with the Royal Ballet, Cinderella with the Marquis de Cuevas Company. Haythorne then discusses his return to London to work on Divorce Me Darling at the Players Theatre, Ballet Rambert workshops, Peter Darrell and Western Theatre Ballet including its relationship to the Sadler Wells Opera Ballet company, his role as assistant director at Western Theatre Ballet, touring Scottish Ballet to Australia, his return to Australia and meeting Margaret Walker, his application for the artistic directorship of the Queensland Ballet; and his choreographic and directorial ambitions.
