Diplomat. Peter Spottswood worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs for about 30 years and was Vice-Consul in Rangoon in the 1960s. Spottswood learned Chinese and travelled to China during the time when the country was almost closed to outsiders. He was in China at the time of the Tian'anmen Square protest in June 1989. He made notes of words and their pronunciation. He climbed mountains in Nepal, India and Tibet and recorded heights. Spottswood was involved in Buddhism, was a ham radio operator, took a great interest in the Aborigines and travelled Australia to find out more about them.
