Summary

Tape 1. Sir Herman Black talks about his family history; his father's athletic ability; his childhood memories; their poverty; his father's alcoholism and subsequent death; his mother's remarriage; World War I; his brother's experiences as a soldier overseas; his secondary education; his learning of the Japanese language; his interest in Japanese culture; reasons for entering the Faculty of Economics at the University. -- Tape 2. His degree in Economics; exams; his first job at Parkes High School; his social life; the suspension of Alexander Mackie; his transfer to Randwick High; his wife's instability resulting in schizophrenia; great intellectual influences on his life. Tape 3. The need for a continuing relationship between the university and its graduates; his work as an economic advisor and his current position.

Black was an economist and Chancellor of the University of Sydney, 1970-1990.
