- Summary:
-
It is difficult to name any material or substance used in everyday life which has not been blamed for being some form of health hazard. Wood, particularly in dust form, is no exception. However the incidence of harmful effects caused by it is extremely low compared with those caused by other industrial materials. It was already known in early history that a number of timbers could under certain circumstances affect human health adversely. For instance in early times some Australian aboriginal tribes used the poison from mulga wood very effectively on their spears to injure or kill their enemies. Even now its dust remains a hazard and so does the dust of some other lesser-known Australian and imported species to which the local timber industry is turning increasingly. Unfortunately information dealing with these species with regard to their physiological effect on humans is not always available.
