The Kenneth Myer lecture provides an opportunity for an eminent Australian to make a significant statement on a broad range of subjects of particular interest to the person giving the lecture. Chaney, a former politician, Chancellor of Murdoch University (1995-2002) & Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia speaks about the complexities of the challenges of indigenous issues confronting Australian society, particularly native title and Aboriginal education; the contributions of the Myer Family to Australian society, in particular the Sidney Myer Fund; social justice, ethics, community & government obligations towards areas of entrenched disadvantage in Australian society.

The Hon. Fred Chaney spent 16 years as a Liberal Senator for Western Australia followed by three years in the House of Representatives as the Member for Pearce, before leaving federal politics in 1993. He held several ministerial portfolios, including Aboriginal Affairs from 1978-1980. Mr Chaney has subsequently maintained his close involvement with Indigenous Australians. He became a member of the Native Title Tribunal in 1995 and was appointed deputy President in 2000. In 2001 he was appointed Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia.
