Born in Boston in 1942, Ansara grew up in a bohemian family with links to the Communist Party. After emigrating to Australia in 1969 she became active in the women's movement, joined the Communist Party of Australia and studied directing and cinematography at the Australian Film and Television School. Her films, chiefly documentaries, have won numerous awards.
