Stenhouse was born in Scotland in 1806. In 1839 he emigrated to Sydney, where he practised as a solicitor, and took a prominent part in legal, literary, educational and scientific circles. He was noted for the help he gave Australian writers, including D. H. Deniehy, Charles Harpur and Henry Kendall.
