74 letters written while serving as midshipman in H.M.S. Curacoa on the Australian station. They are family letters, written mainly to his parents the Viscount and Viscountess Milton. As well as providing a detailed description of his cruise in the South Sea Islands, the letters also include many lively and interesting sketches and maps. 74 letters written while serving as midshipman in HMS Curacoa on the Australian Station. They were family letters written to his parents and sisters. Letters include detailed accounts of the Waikato-Tauranga war in New Zealand, mining in Australia and his cruise in the South Sea Islands. Many of the ships in port are described in the letters. Foljambe gave a very detailed description of his cruise in the South Sea Islands. He describes the places, people, food, customs, government, implements, houses - everything in fact that a young man with a lively eye and interest might notice. The letters were privately published in an edited form - `Three years on the Australian station' [London, Hatchard & Co, 1868].
- Biography/History:

Midshipman in the Royal Navy to 1867, then lieutenant until 1870. Later he made a career in politics and was a Liberal M.P., 1880-92. In 1893 he was created Baron Hawkesbury and in 1905 Earl of Liverpool. He was lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria, 1894-95, and lord steward of King Edward VII's household from 1905 until his death in 1907.
