Professor Eric Saint, a medical practitioner, discusses his family background and childhood in Newcastle on Tyne; medical studies at Durham University; political awareness and sympathies in the late 1930s; posting to the Far East as a medical officer in the Air Force, 1942-45; doctoral work on miners' diseases; emigration to Australia, 1948; difficulties of life and work with the flying doctor service in Port Hedland; medical research work in Melbourne; Commonwealth Fund Fellowship in Britain, the United States and Canada; involvement in the formation of the first medical school in Perth and the Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre; experiences while Dean of the University of Queensland; committee work in Papua New Guinea and with the National Health and Research Council and the Australian Medical Examination Council; later concerns with geriatrics, alcoholism and drug use; his visit to China; and people who have influenced his life.
