Tanner, an Australian cartoonist, talks about his family background; childhood in Sydney; religious and political influences at home; early interest in drawing; schooling; factory work and attending the Julian Ashton art school. He then discusses working at the Daily Telegraph in particular the composing room; mail room and artists' room. Tanner then talks about his work as Press artist and illustrator; Communist party membership; Telegraph daily editorial cartoonist and the issue of censorship. He then discusses working in London; Daily Sketch; cartooning influences and development of style. Tanner then talks about the Bulletin and publication of "Cartoons of Australian History" with Peter Coleman. He then talks about his work as Age daily editorial cartoonist; travel in Asia; Age Saturday column 'Tanner with Words' 1970 to 1997 and his cartooning style.
