Baxter talks about early interest in chemical engineering; describes his first job with ICI; his experiments with uranium; recalls events leading up to his work in America; his work after World War II; his job in Australia; Lucas Heights and his involement with NIDA. SIDE 2. Recalls demonstrations held at the University of NSW; uses and applications of nuclear energy in industry; the power of nuclear wapons; Australia's nuclear energy needs and his involvement with the Opera House Trust and its problems.

John Philip Baxter was born in 1905 at Machynlleth, Wales and completed postgraduate qualifications in chemical engineering at Birmingham University. He gradually became interested in nuclear energy and from 1940 worked as a consultant in US and UK programs, including the Manhattan Project. In 1950 he was appointed Professor of Chemical Engineering at the NSW University of Technology (later the University of NSW) serving as its Vice-Chancellor from 1955-1972. He chaired the Australian Atomic Energy Commission from 1957-72). He also chaired the Sydney Opera House Trust from 1968-75 including officiating at its official opening in 1973. He died in Sept. 1989.
