Bill Wade born 1940 in Brisbane speaks about his father joining the army and suffering from a prolonged illness; his father buying a dairy farm at Mundubbera, Qld. in 1946; his mother doing much of the work; riding to school and learning to ride at a young age; milking cows; there being two children in the family (Bill and Colin); school and the class sizes; using horses on the farm to plough before his father bought a tractor and truck; beginning work with draught horses in 1980; always being interested in horse equipment; growing lucerne; working a team of ten horses on the farm; ploughing competitions; shoeing horses; growing small crops on the farm; water sources on the farm; breeds of cattle on the farm; where cattle was sold.
Wade discusses the show at Charters Towers; sicknesses in horses; the breeds of draught horses kept (Clydesdale and Percheron); the difference between the breeds; breeding horses; the horse team at Charters Towers; eight horses in the team; he names the horses and describes where they were positioned in the team; why he and his brother, Colin Wade, attended the show at Charters Towers; he talks about his last foal, 'Hobo'; gelding horses; working horses in a team on the farm; breeding Welsh mountain ponies (phaetons) and their uses on the farm; his saddle and leather work, making saddles, harnesses and collars; using mules in a team; making a buckboard for the draught horses, including the wheels; explains how to make and attach an iron wheel and what 'felloes' are; making wheel spokes and buckboards.
