MS 5846 comprises ten issues of the handwritten ship newspaper "The southern cross", produced on board the "Sunda" during her voyage from London to Moreton Bay, Queensland, 23 March-23 May 1865. The issues contain records of births, deaths and a marriage, verse, weather reports, reports from the ship's mate and surgeon, letters to the editor and homilies on various topics. Edited by Algernon Lempriere (1 fol. packet).

The 1865 voyage of the emigrant ship "Sunda" was commanded by Captain Flynn with G.W. Paynter as surgeon superintendent. The "Sunda" was built at Richmond, Maine, in the United States, in 1854 and named "Gauntlet". The vessel was renamed "Sunda" in 1863.
