| Summary |
This plaster statuette, a rare survivor of the last era of Macau's prosperity before British commerce swept aside that of Portugal, is thought to have been made in Manila about 1770, three years before Simao da Rosa's death. It shows a successful businessman in the formal attire of the period, and indicates that colonial dress followed closely those of metropolitan Portugal -- adapted from a note by J. M. Braga, MS 4300, Series 7, folder 94.
