Dr Couch entered Sydney Teachers College in 1938 and taught in New South Wales for a few years before taking on the role of School Counsellor. From 1948 to 1960 he was a member of staff at the Wagga Wagga Teachers College, N.S.W. In 1955, Dr Couch completed his Ph.D. studies at the University of London. From 1961 to 1976 he was a memeber of staff at the Sydney Teachers College, including some years as Vice Principal. On 1971 he was elected to the Fellowship of the Australian College of Education. On his retirement in 1976, Dr Couch then commenced a period of 13 years as a consultant to the non-government sector in N.S.W., including work with the Catholic Education in Sydney, and a member of the Planning Committee for the Australian Catholic University.
