- Summary:
-
In his speech Ralph Harry speaks about the theme for Australia Day, 1981, and stresses the need for national unity - "One Nation : One Future". Unity in a country like Australia is not a monolithic, homogeneous, monotonous unity based on a uniform culture - one only language, a single religion, or an egocentric history. The National Australia Day Committee and the State and Territorial Councils - like the excellent Council which has for years organised Australia Day celebrations in Canberra, have stressed over the past years the importance of seeing 26th January as the first meeting of two of the cultures which together comprise the united Australian nation of today.
In his speech Manning Clark speaks about firstly defining who we are as a people, we are all beneficiaries and victims of a very unique environment. He also speaks about the Aborigines, European Australians, Asian Australians, Pacific Island Australians and New Zealand Australians. Secondly, he speaks about the European having something in common with Aboriginal mythology hecause both have been influenced by the harsh environment. Thirdly, he speaks about tension in Australia within the European community, tension between the old Australians and British Australians. He closes his speech saying that Australians have a chance to make our own history.
