Born in Scotland. Arrived in Australia in 1885, was active in the Amalgamated Miners' Union, represented Gympie in State Parliament 1893-1896 and 1899-1901. Held federal seat of Wide Bay 1901-1915 and was 3 times Australia's Prime Minister, 1908-1909, 1910-1913, and 1914-1915.
