- Summary:
-
Aimed at years 4-7 studies of society and environment and English students, this publication provides an exciting and lively study of citizenship in today's pluralistic, democratic Australian society. Through the 23 clearly described and lively lesson plans in this publication, students critically explore through action research, group and class work what it means to be a citizen, what civic action is and the interdependence between public work and work at home. Students are given the opportunity to work with a wide variety of texts, visual works and multimedia resources to develop and gain a mature understanding of their current and future role as active and positive citizens. The units of work consider a range of issues from past, present and future perspectives and identify and challenge cultural, racist and gender discrimination. Students are thereby given opportunities to positively value difference and diversity among our citizens. The lesson plans are highly flexible and can be used in a number of combinations to best suit class needs. There are also opportunities to integrate with other learning areas such as the arts and to adapt the materials to suit both younger and older students.
