Diplomat. Charles Que-Fong Lee was born in Darwin in 1913. In 1927 Lee won the North Australia Scholarship to attend Southport School on the Gold Coast. He graduated from the University of Queensland as a Bachelor of Arts in 1935 and later joined the Commonwealth Public Service. Lee was the first Australian-born Chinese to become an Australian diplomat, serving in various capacities in the Department of External Affairs. In 1941 he was a member of the advance party when the Australian Government opened diplomatic relations with China.
Lee later served in the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in 1954-1956 during the Sukarno era. Other postings included the United Nations in New York, Singapore, the Philippines, New Zealand, Brazil and Spain. In 1973 he joined the delegation that negotiated the establishment of an Australian embassy in Beijing. After his retirement in 1973, Lee retained an interest in Chinese affairs and, with his wife Nancy, provided much informal help to Chinese ambassadors and their staff in Canberra. Lee died in Canberra in 1996.
