- Part of a continuing campaign by Voltaire to clear the name of the Chevalier de La Barre, who was tried and executed for, among other things, failing to kneel for a religious procession.
- Signed at end: D'Etallonde de Morival. As a youth, Gaillard d'Etallonde was tried and convicted with La Barre. He fled to Prussia before the trial, however, and escaped execution. He later adopted the name Morival.
- Suggested place of publication from Bengesco, G. Voltaire, v. II, p. 310. Bibliotheque nationale. Catalogue general, v. CCXIV, col. 1480 states that this edition may have been printed in Lausanne.
- "Au roi tres-chretien, en son conseil" (p. [3]-23) has caption title and is signed at end: A Neufchatel, ce 30 juin 1775.
- "Precis de la procedure d'Abbeville" (p. 24-37) has caption title.
