- Summary:
-
Geoffrey Bolton, a Professor of History talks about his early life; education at North Perth State School, Wesley College and University of Western Australia; recollections of Perth in the 1930s and the influences which helped develop the perspectives of an Australian history with which he was later associated. He describes the academic environment at the University of Western Australia during his time as a student under Fred Alexander and Frank Crowley and also the extracurricular side of university life. Bolton discusses his role as editor of student newspaer, "The Pelican" and his involvement with the University Dramatic Society and literary publication "Winthrop Review". He talks in detail about each of his major research interests and subsequent publications; the publication hiatus in the 1970s and his perception about the way his previous work had been received by the profession in comparison with the work of contemporaries such as Geoffrey Blainey and Ken Inglis.
Bolton also talks about the role of consensus in W.A. history; Blainey's view of the reasons for NSW's settlement; usefulness of oral history as a research tool and the history of the wrecks off the W.A. coast including his role on the Australia Netherlands Committee on all Dutch Shipwrecks and the establishment of the National Maritime Museum in Sydney. He then outlines his work in progress and his research plans both for his time at Edith Cowan University and his longer term plans for his 'retirement'.
