Summary

A collection of research material compiled by Heydon whilst writing a biographical study of Sir George Pearce entitled Quiet Decision (1965). The papers include photocopies of newspaper cuttings, parliamentary debates and speeches, notes on the Pearce papers, typescript drafts and galley proofs, extracts from books and journals, copies of Heydon's diaries while Secretary of the Department of Immigration (1961-1971), and correspondence with people who knew Sir George Pearce. Heydon had corresponded with Pearce's children Phillip, L.G. Pearce, and Mrs Dorothy Ellison; with librarians and academics and with politicians and administrators including Sir E. John Bunting, E.J. Holloway, Lord Bruce, Cecil Edwards, Sir John Latham, Senator Shane Paltridge, Arthur Calwell, Sir Paul Hasluck, Sir Frederick Shedden, Sir Robert Menzies, Sir Allan Watt, Ulrich Ellis, Sir Frank Richardson, S. Landau and M. C. Boniwell.

Biography/History

Sir Peter Heydon worked briefly as Private Secretary to Sir George Pearce and between 1936 and 1960 held a number of senior administrative and diplomatic positions with the Dept. of External Affairs. He was Secretary of the Dept. of Immigration from 1961 to 1971.
