Summary

Wedd talks about his family background; father's profession; lifelong enjoyment of drawing and the popularity of comics particularly Syd Nicholl's "Fatty Finn". In 1937 he left school and he describes his first job as a lithograph artist, followed by one as a furniture artist for Corkhill and Lang, Sydney. This involved drawing all the furniture available and then these drawings would be used for advertising. He then talks about his experiences during WWII firstly with the First Artillery Survey Regiment and then the airforce. At the end of the war he completed his arts studies at East Sydney Technical College and put together his first comic strip, "Sword and Sabre" which was finally accepted by Syd Nicholls for his magazine "Middy Malone". He then started doing works with a bushranging theme and created the character "Captain Justice".

Wedd then talks about his work with "Stamp news"; method of working and researching a topic and the publication "The making of a nation" which was put together from the comic strip of the same name. He discusses the effect of the influx of American comics on the Australian market and censorship during '50s of Australian comics. Wedd then talks about his work with "ABC children's annual", "Chucklers Weekly", Dollar Bill and Speedwell Steve characters as well as his current work with museums and the establishment of his own museum.
