Comic artists and illustrators oral history project

Summary

Les Dixon, cartoonist, talks about his family background; childhood; schooling at Balmain, Drummoyne and Cobargo then by correspondence from a school in Plunkett St, Sydney. Drawing lessons were also by correspondence. He then talks about his early jobs and the accident which led to a long period on compensation and his decision to submit drawings to various newspapers around Sydney. In 1937 or '38 he sold his first drawing to "Sydney Bulletin". He describes the methods used by newspapers at the time to choose drawings. Dixon did freelance work for "Rydge's business journal", "Smith's Weekly" and the "Bulletin". In 1940 he drew a series of comic books for Frank Johnson Publications and from 1942-50 he worked with "Smith's Weekly". Dixon then talks about taking over the strip, "Bluey and Curley" which he did from 1957-75. He also describes a strip that he created recently "Sandy Lakes" which he now combines with "Bluey and Curley". Dixon then talks about his ideas for cartoons and the work he is doing now.
