103 year old Harry L. Perriman, mechanical engineer, talks about his experiences as a missionary on Groote Eylandt, largest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria Perriman; his family's move to Australia from New Zealand in 1886 when he was three; his memories of growing up in Melbourne; his mechanical hobbies; how he came to join the Recubites and how this lead to joining the first official St. John's Ambulance Brigade which he progressed in until after 8 years he took up missionary work; how his paramedical training later assisted him in his missionary work; how he joined a missionary service league and was later persuaded to volunteer for a mission on Groot Eylandt in 1919; his close shave with pneumonic influenza, a worldwide epidemic, which delayed him for two years; his initial stay at Roper River Mission in 1921 already established for 18 years; after 6 months moved to the newly established Groot Eylandt Mission; how they learnt the language; native vs. modern medicines; how they used native currencies for trading; his experiences with the native foods; how the natives kept their women and children away from them for nearly four years; the threat of natives from the mainland who would kill for flour; how in 1917 the Northern Territory administration had sent all half-castes to white settlements for education which was the pattern the Mission followed; visit of Sir Hubert Wilkins in 1925; how the exchanging of babies between the Mission and the natives broke down barriers; how as an engineer he got tied up in WWII and married at 59.
