John Hoyle, diplomat, talks about the factors influencing his decision to join the Dept. of External Affairs and his early work experiences. He then discusses his first posting in 1952 to Colombo as the junior political officer followed by Wellington, New Zealand, in 1956 for 3 years then Israel and his work as a liaison officer with Shin Bet. Hoyle then talks about his return to Australia to look after the specialised agencies for 2 years and then becoming the director of foreign service training. He then describes his postings to Stockholm and West Berlin and his involvement with the return of an Aboriginal child to Australia. Hoyle then returned to Australia to take charge of the South Pacific area of the Dept. and to work with South Pacific Forum.
He then describes his position as the 1st Australian resident High Commissioner in the Caribbean; operation of the Bauxite Authority Commission and posting to Dacca, Bangladesh in 1977, followed by 12 months at ANU to write "Australia and the South Pacific : Aspects of the Political and Security relationship in the 1980s. Hoyle then discusses his work as inaugural branch head of Refugees, Immigration and Asylum; return to working with South Pacific and his last appointment, to Yugoslavia, for 4 years. He then discusses the changes that he has seen in the Dept. over the years.
