Summary

Keith Bain speaks about his childhood, family background and early career as a school teacher. He talks about his early exposure to dance and theatre, his experiences in ballroom dancing, the influence of Gertrud Bodenwieser and her teaching techniques; and his determination to make dance a career. He then discusses his work as a choreographer, especially as a teacher and choreographer for actors in musical theatre. He speaks of his work with NIDA, Ensemble Theatre, Independent Theatre and Old Tote Theatre, with particular mention of the works 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'The Legend of King O'Malley', 'Flash Jim Vaux' and 'Don Giovanni'. Bain also talks about organizations he has been involved with including Australian Council for the Arts and the Australasian Teachers Contemporary Dance Association. He discusses the difficulty in defining 'contemporary dance' and speaks about the direction of modern dance in Australia.
