From 1970-72, Renkin was employed as a social worker at the Victorian Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, during which time he was the last white administrator of the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Settlement.
Renkin outlines the history of Lake Tyers and conditions at the Settlement. Renkin's assignment was to transfer the management of the Settlement to the residents. In 1972, he returned to Melbourne as Assistant Director, State Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs. From 1975-1979, he was the first Commonwealth Regional Director, Aboriginal Affairs responsible for Victoria, Tasmania, and southern New South Wales.
