Prof. Steele, retired French scholar & Arts patron, speaks about his family background & growing up on the north coast of NSW during the 1950s & 1960s; his tertiary education, studying French at the University of Sydney; his trip to Paris in the mid-1960s where he taught English in an elite high school whilst he studied French at the Sorbonne University, Paris; becoming a tutor in English at this University while furthering his French studies; how along with others of his generation, he became involved in the radical realignment of teaching priorities and strategies in university-level study of French; his involvement in not only the reshaping of the curriculum at the French Department, University of Sydney but also having played an active role in the formation and development of a range of academic associations in the area of applied linguistics.
Steele recalls his teaching position at Harvard University, Mass., delivering papers at many academic conferences and playing an organisational role in the running of these - mostly Applied Linguistics - organisations; having published 27 books on aspects of learning and teaching French language and culture; his personal involvement in non-academic cultural activities, often serving as a mediator and liaison between Australian and French interests; having been awarded France's highest award, the Legion of Honour and an Australian Centenary of Federation award for 'promoting arts and culture in the general community.
