- Summary:
-
Prof. Stanley's lecture provides a snapshot of children's health & well-being in contemporary Australia. She addresses the question "have improvements in the social & economic & general conditions that we've experienced in Australia resulted in improved outcomes for children & youth". She speaks about the indictators used to measure the current state of health & well being in Australia; mortality rates for indigenous infants & children; inconsistencies in the collection of infant data on a state level; low birth weight & the lack of any significant improvements over the last decade; common & rising diseases occurring in children; increases in the intellectual disability of children & adolscents from a variety of causes in the last decade.
Prof. Stanley talks about the impact of lifestyle factors on the well being of children & young adults; the need for better strategies to improve retention rates in all levels of education for indigenous children; an increase on the number of children being diagnosed with health issues & at a younger age. She addresses the question as to why in Australia increases in social disparity are evident. Prof. Stanley argues that communities who have the capacity to intervene in some of these health & well being issues early are better placed to see positive outcomes for their children; there is a need to place a greater emphasis on preventive policy measures rather than rely on reactive responses.
