Summary

The records of the Constitutional Convention include lists of candidates, how to vote information & publications of the Australian Electoral Commission, and other material relating to the electoral process (including video Young Flag produced by candidate group Republic4U). A quantity of website material representing delegates and their agents & a variety of media servers & an extensive collection of news cuttings covering the period is also included. Minutes of the Convention proceedings in this collection are incomplete. The records also include 8 binders of numbered correspondence relating to submissions to the Constitutional Convention and 37 VHS videotapes on proceedings of Constitutional Convention plenary sessions.

The Constitutional Convention was held 2-13 Feb. 1998, Old Parliament House, Canberra. The aim of the Convention was to determine whether Australia should become a republic, the most appropriate republican model to be put to the voters, & to recommend a suitable timeframe & circumstances for such a referendum. The Convention was attended by 152 delegates with half elected under the Constitutional Convention (Election) Act 1997 & the other half appointed by the Commonwealth Govt. including 40 representatives from all Australian legislatures.

Full details of proceedings and voting on final resolutions will be presented to the Commonwealth Parliament & published in a report on the Convention.
