Freudenberg, journalist, speechwriter, press secretary and author, was born in Brisbane in 1934 to parents who took an active interest in politics. He speaks of being inspired to be a politician at the age of 12 in 1946 when he read a biography of Disraeli; his school years at Brisbane Church of England Grammar where he focused on a career in journalism, seeing it as a means to entering politics; taking a cadetship in 1952 with the Brisbane Telegraph which led to various newspaper jobs before sailing to London in 1953; becoming politically radicalised due to his close proximity to unfolding international events during his years in London. Freudenberg speaks of his reasons for returning to Australia in the 1950s; the position of Deputy News Editor of Channel 9 T.V. station where he developed the skill for writing reasonable English scripts quickly; organising 2 of P.M. Menzies reports to the nation.
Freudenberg speaks of his appointment to the position of Press Secretary and Speechwriter for Arthur Calwell (Federal Opposition Leader) in 1961 and Gough Whitlam (Federal Opposition Leader) in 1967; of the Calwell and Whitlam years in politics and the national issues both Leaders and the country as a whole faced during the 1960s and 1970s.
