- Summary:
-
Patrick Gallagher, publisher and Managing Director, Allen and Unwin, speaks of his career from the mid-1970s when Australian publishing was still dominated by imported books and Australian writers still tended to get published overseas first, how he worked at that time for Australasian Publishing Company (APC), a branch of Jonathan Cape, which published major Australian writers, how substantial Australian texts had become popular by the late 1970s with the majority supporting higher educational courses and dominated by the search for an Australian identity, how in 1976 he recommended to Allen and Unwin in Britain to establish a publisher in Australia for publishing Australian academics, by 1981 he began to venture into fiction, particularly crime fiction, why reprinting of titles fails, his involvement in promoting authors by tours and writers festivals, the marketing methods of Allen and Unwin, his relunctance to discuss the controversies over the Vogel Award, the phenomenon of "best-sellers", his caution in extending into CD-ROM and electronic publishing, the trend to increased export of books, his expectations that the Asian market will grow with a decline in academic publishing as electronic publishing moves steadily into academic, business and reference works, his views on editorial standards, his personal plans, his account of the publishing of Helen Demidenko's The Hand that Signed the Paper, how its historical accuracy was assessed, how her true identity was revealed, how the issue was blown out of proportion and became a media fiasco, and how publishers should handle such situations.
