Summary

Kate Champion introduces this interview with a discussion of her family, educational background and early dance training. She talks about her early choreographic experiences, and about working with Karen Kerhoven on Ballet Australia workshops. She speaks about her experiences studying and performing in Munich, her work in Australia with Kai Tai Chan and the One Extra Company, Cheryl Stock and Dance North, Leigh Warren and Australian Dance Theatre and Don Asker and Human Veins Dance Theatre. She speaks at length about her associations with Lloyd Newson and DV8, both as a performer and as production assistant. Some Newson works she discusses are 'Enter Achilles', 'Strange fish', 'The happiest day of my life' and Newson's Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival work 'The cost of living'.

Champion continues with a discussion of the need to make a living by working outside the arts, the impact on her career of winning the Robert Helpmann scholarship, working with Russell Dumas, and her solo works including 'Face value' and 'About face'. The interview concludes with Champion's thoughts on her company, Force majeure, on her work 'Same, same, but different', and on her aspirations for her future as a choreographer and director. Throughout the interview Champion freely discusses the philosophical basis of her creative processes.
