Biography/History

The Wilderness Protection Committee was formed in 1972. The aim of the organisation was to ensure that environmental study and public enquiries are undertaken before projects, which could endanger national parks, go ahead. The Committee was formed by a group who expressed concern about the proposed route of the gas pipelines from South Australia to Sydney. The original plan was to take the pipeline across the Blue Mountains National Park. The campaign was successful in stopping the pipeline from being built through the environmentally sensitive Hawkesbury River area.
