| Biography/History |
Francee or Frances Margaret Anderson-Anderson was born in Adelaide, February 10, 1898. Her career began in Sydney in 1915 and in 1922 made her Broadway debut. Her first major success was in 1924 in New York and by 1927 was a well established star when she first toured Australia. She returned to Australia five times, fleetingly during World World II, passing through Sydney, Melbourne to entertain Allied troops on the islands. In 1943 she gave a special performance of "Macbeth" for the Australian troops in New Guinea. She returned to Australia in 1955, 1966 for a series of performances with the Adelaide Arts Festival and lastly in 1973 when she filmed "Inn of the Damned" Her long career included film, television, was centred on the American stage yet she appeared with the Old Vic. Company, London. She was a great tragic actress especially in the major roles from the Greek plays, Shakespeare, Chekhov and O'Neil. She won the American Academy of Arts and Letters Medal in 1948. Made a Dame in 1960. |
