Historian and academic. Patrick James O'Farrell was born in Greymouth, New Zealand in 1933 and graduated from the University of Canterbury and with a doctorate from the Australian National University before joining the University of New South Wales in 1959. He was Professor of History at the University of New South Wales from 1972-1999, and became Emeritus Scientia Professor of History upon retirement. Among O'Farrell's published works are Harry Holland, militant socialist (1964), The Catholic Church in Australia: a short history 1788-1967 (1968), Ireland's English question: Anglo-Irish relations 1534-1971 (1971), The Catholic Church and community: an Australian history (1985), and Through Irish eyes: Australian and New Zealand images of the Irish 1788-1948 (1994). His The Irish in Australia (1986) won the NSW Premier's Literary Award in 1987 and the Ernest Scott Prize for Australian History.
