Summary

Murphy, choreographer and artistic director, speaks of the problems surrounding the music used in his production 'After Venice', his particular approach to collaboration, making 'Nutcracker' for the Australian Ballet, other pieces he has produced since 1990, his application for the position of the artistic directorship of the Australian Ballet, his vision for Sydney Dance Company, the financial difficulties of touring, bringing overseas companies to Sydney, having a personal signature to his work.

Biography/History Graeme Murphy, born in Melbourne on Nov. 2, 1950, is a leading choreographer. At age 15 he became the youngest male pupil in Melbourne's Australian Ballet School. He was later selected for the Australian Ballet in 1968 and furthered his dance studies in the USA. He was appointed in 1976 as Choreographer and Artistic Director of the Sydney Dance Company where he has created many innovative works and won international praise. He has argued against the use of narrative in dance, relying only on the economy and immediacy of movement. He has also choreographed for the Australian Ballet, the Australian Opera and the ice-skating duo Torvill and Dean.
