Summary

Kosky, Director, AIDS Council of Western Australia, speaks of her background, her appointment as Director of the W.A. AIDS Council, her priorities in promoting education on the prevention of AIDS particularly to all minority groups, prejudice against the Council, managing a large body of volunteers, the difficulty in promoting a positive media image of the Council, the police perception that drug-dealing was operating within the Council and complications arising from the needle exchange program, how they established an outreach van, the problems in outreach to some minority groups, the dilemma of community-based organisations in advocating an issue unpopular with their conservative constituents, the use of peer education methods, teachers' cooperation with the Council's school talks, the problems in evaluating their AIDS education programs, the role of the Commonwealth AIDS Unit, dealing with sensationalist journalists, their work with People Living with AIDS, establishing a shared care medical treatment model for AIDS sufferers and the provision of a voluntary carers group, educating health care workers about AIDS, the inherent instability of the Council (with a new Board elected every 2 years), developments in legislation concerning individual rights vs. threats to public health.
