Parkinson, architect, theatre consultant and amateur theatrical playwright and performer, speaks of his early background in England, how he wanted to be an architect from the age of six, undertaking architecture course when called up for army service in 1943, returned to civilian life in 1947, graduated from the Architectural School in London in 1950, developed an early interest in building houses and particularly theatres, in 1952 immigrated to Western Australia, worked for Hawkins and Sands until its collapse in 1964, from 1965-1980 in the partnership Hill and Parkinson, from 1980 started his own firm but architectural projects were very limited, became a science fiction fan from 1956, has painted as a surrealist since after WWII, never an Establishment architect having too strong an artistic bent, his involvement in theatre and love of theatres.
Parkinson discusses how he wrote amateur pantomines and staged The Shiralee, how he built a home theatre in his own residence in the 1960s, how he came to design the award-winning Octagon Theatre at University of Western Australia (UWA) built in 1969, the success of Hill and Parkinson in residential designs, how he redesigned the New Dolphin Theatre for UWA, his frustrations over later theatre projects, his commission in Aug. 1977 to restore His Majesty's Theatre in Perth and the success of the restoration, his decision following this project to quit his partnership and establish himself as a theatre consultant, his bout with depression, his work on town theatres in the Outback, the theatrical scene in Perth and its growth since the 1960s, his marriage in 1956 to wife Helen, a music teacher, and his family, his general practice as an architect, and his part-time teaching in architecture.
