MS 8269 comprises drafts, notes, correspondence and research material relating to Baranay's publications, Between careers and The saddest pleasure (1989), Pagan (1990), The edge of Bali (1992) and Rascal rain: a year in Papua New Guinea (1994). Additional material relates to her part-time position on the Immigration Review Panel (1986-1989); and there is also a series on miscellaneous writings from 1983-1989. Correspondents include Sidonie Scott, Zigmund Michalowski, Vicki Molloy, Joan Long, Lynn Sellwood, Penny Chapman, Mick Young, Robert Ray, Alf Reina and Daniela Benussi (14 boxes).
The Acc10.184 instalment comprises papers reflecting Baranay's career as a writer. They include: correspondence; book, television and film projects documentation and contracts; grant applications and reports; journals; and news cuttings. The correspondence documents Baranay's interactions with editors and publishers; festival, workshop and writer-in-residence organisers; film and television personnel; a USA agent, Catherine Hanan; and Australian agent, Barbara Mobbs. Baranay's works which are represented in the papers by correspondence or other records include: television dramas, 'Re-union' and 'Half the sky'; Pagan; Neem dreams; SBS-TV program 'Forum'; and Between careers. In addition there is a complete set of issues of 'Ariel book news' and other publications which Baranay edited, copies of reviews by Baranay, and reviews by others of her works (3 boxes).
The Acc11.128 instalment comprises correspondence, notebooks and photographs. The correspondence includes letters, cards, faxes and emails from agent Barbara Mobbs, friends, editors, publishers and writers, such as John Paramor, Matthew Curlewis, Catherine Hanan, Jenny Pausacker, Isobelle Carmody, Phillip Retsky, Daniel Stephenson, Jeff Buchanan, August Kleinzahler, Frank Moorhouse, Eda Zahl, CM Ketkar, Fran Siegel and Nicolette Stasko. The notebooks comprise daily diaries and journals used to record ideas and events. They document Baranay's life from the 1970s to 2010 in a range of locations, including Sydney and rural New South Wales, Brisbane and the Queensland Gold Coast, Italy and other areas of Europe, India, South East Asia, Papua New Guinea, Cairns, the Torres Strait Islands, New York, Yaddo, San Francisco and Los Angeles. The notebooks include ideas used by Baranay to write many of her books, such as Between careers (1989), The saddest pleasure (1989), Pagan (1990), The edge of Bali (1992), Rascal rain (1994), Sheila Power (1997), Neem dreams (2003), Sun square moon (2005) and With the tiger (2010) (18 boxes).
