Monica Attard, a journalist, speaks of her childhood and upbringing as the daughter of working class migrant parents; growing up in Strathfield in Sydney lacking many non-Anglo immigrants where she encountered considerable prejudice and discrimination; how she got into broadcast journalism by starting in 1979 as a cadet with Fairfax then later with 2WS and then following a 2 year stint seeing the world she was with 2GB; how she completed her Bachelor of Arts majoring in psychology while working part-time with the ABC's new department; later she moved to 2JJJ-FM; her eventual return to mainstream ABC current affairs as a reporter for "AM", "The World Today" and "PM"; her work on Four Corners and Lateline on ABC-TV; how she was posted to Moscow in 1990; returning to Australia in 1994 she became a presenter on "PM" and her current work is now with "The World Today"; her personal life and identity, some of the highlights of her career; the impact of living in Russia and watching the collapse of the old Communist regime and the impact on the Russian people.
