Appenticed when a boy and sailed a number of voyages to Australia, finally settling in Australia and the coastal trade and as pilot at Cooktown, Harbourmaster at Rockhampton, 1880. Served apprenticeship in wooden sailing ships, e.g. Duke of Wellington. Also scrapbook of newspaper articles and manuscripts written by Sykes and published in North Queensland newspapers.
