- Summary:
-
Willis, a taxonomic botanist and author, speaks of his interest in botany being developed during his primary school years at Stanley (Tas.); the training he received at Creswick Forestry School (Vic.) in the late 1920s, the frustrations with early textbooks, having been written by European foresters for European environments; the difficulties foresters in the early years faced coming to terms with and incorporating some of the new scientific knowledge that was becoming known to them. Willis recognised early on the detrimental environmental implications of replacing natural hardwood forests with pines. He recalls the effects of The Depression on towns such as Creswick and Cockatoo; his relationships with the saw mill owners and cutters in the early days of the Forests Service between the 1930s to 1937; the difficulties the Herbarium encountered with government bureaucracy, trying to establish itself as an essential national institution; how World War II had impacted on the National Herbarium.
