Dr. Chittleborough, an environmentalist, talks about his family background; parents' occupations; religion; education at Unley High School in Adelaide; difficulties with subject choices for 2nd attempt at Leaving Certificate; studied botany and zoology at University; geology studied under Sir Douglas Mawson. In 1949 he spent a year at Heard Is. where he had a general charter to do a biological survey. Life on Heard Is is described with mention given to recreational activities; cooking experiments and first impressions on returning home.
He then talks about the work involved in studying the reproductive physiology of the humpback whale; membership of Scientific Committee of International Whaling Commission; efforts in trying to get international agreement to reduce the humpback whale quota; Point Cloates Whaling Station; Carnarvon Station; collapse of humpback whaling in 1962; rock lobster research; involvement with LaPorte Titanium Dioxide Refinery near Bunbury; Francis Ratcliffe, 1st chief of CSIRO Wildlife Division; Australian Conservation Foundation and Environmental Protection Authority in WA. Chittleborough also talks about Cockburn Sound Study; establishment of Div. of Resource Management in 1983; preparation of new State Conservation Strategy; State Environmental Review and its publication and his plans for the future.
