MS 3640 comprises the vocabulary book of the J.H.L. Waterhouse (d. 1942) containing British Solomon Islands words. The notebook includes translations of phrases and explanations of local customs and manners. Two leaves loosely inserted in the notebook contain handwritten excerpts from The Sydney gazette of Saturday 2 May, 1818, relating to the arrival of the ship "Lady Castlereagh", under the command of Captain G. Weltden, in Sydney with 300 male prisoners. Reverend Walter Lawry of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society also arrived in Sydney on this vessel.
