Gallacher - went to the United states and Canada and studied Indian, Eskimo and other schools where English is not the vernacular language, and returned to recommend teaching and vocational guidance aimed at maintenance of traditional skills, the re-location of educational centres to facilitate local attendance, and the use of achievement assessments apart from standard testing p. 20; Harry Giese (Director of Child and Social Welfare) examined government policies in the United States (Alaska) and Canada (Northwest Territories) and sought local responses on tribal anxiety about 'urban drift' by younger members, money economy versus craft-based subsistence, the use of reservations p. 20-21; 1967 Max Daniels, an Aboriginal carpenter, worked in Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, and New Caledonia comparing skills and needs in home and boat building, community self-administration and cooperative marketing (no report submitted) p. 21; 1969 Pastor Paul Albrecht (Finke River Mission) went to India for a year to work in communities where social change had brought about differing attitudes between the elder and younger generations p. 21; Aboriginal Pastor Brady (of Brisbane) studied the social adaptation of those separated from traditional backgrounds p. 21; Rev. Alan Galt studied country towns with fringe areas where Aboriginal communities required help in semi-skilled employment, or where state or local government could help by placement in agricultural/small industry development p. 21; 1970 L. N. Penhall (Social Welfare Branch of the Northern Territory) studied the use and effect of alcohol on indigenous people in Mexico, Japan and South America, for two years thereafter he continued work in this field reporting sadly that results were minimal and substantial social and legislative changes since that time have altered conditions p. 21; 1971 John Moriarty (third year university student) studied culture/community centres, youth programs and the preservation of traditional cultures in ethnic minorities of New Zealand, Hawaii, Alaska, continental U.S.A. and Canada (no report submitted) p. 21; 1975 R. J. Moore went to reside in the Lapp commuity of northern Finland where a cohesive and legally recognised ethnic community is threatened more by economic encroachment than neglect in political representation or cultural erosion (no report produced) p. 21; H. J. Penrith (Executive Officer of Aboriginal Hostels) studied accommodation and management, including optimum numbers, of hostels for indigenous people; 1971 G. A. Mill (community self-help and economic organisation) surveyed cooperative practices in India, U.S.A., Sweden, Canada and Fiji p. 22; 1977 Alick Jackomos (community adviser to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, Victoria) studied Negro and Indian self-help programs, his report covers both the problems of ethnic integration into urban economic and social structures, and some of the problems faced where there had been a return to tribal lands and programs of traditional activities p. 22.
